MEET UKRAINIAN DESIGN AND CRAFT IN NEW YORK
Famous Ukrainian artist Masha Reva forms the colour set of Gropius chairs as part of the Ukrainian creators fair ‘i am u are’.The main idea is to support the fair's concept to show that modern Ukraine is all about diversity: a curated exhibition, "i am u are" showcases over 120 techs, art, and fashion projects. We decided to use bright wool fabric designed by Danish graphic artist Finn Sködt for KVADRAT textiles to boost this concept.
On the 24th of February 2022, Russia declared war on Ukraine. We are admires the braveness of our citizens, government, and military forces. And thankful to everyone who supports us during these difficult times. NOOM doesn’t relinquish its obligations to customers. Our productions are distributed; factories and the team are not in attack zones.Unfortunately, the delivery dates will be shifted. We will make every effort to promptly inform you about the situation in Ukraine and about the possible dates for sending your orders. We ask for your understanding and support.

Gropius Low Chair Military EditionBy Kateryna Sokolova & NOOM in collaboration with Nataliya Bakulina & Antonina Latayko
Concept:
The exhibition shows two periods of Ukrainian design: before and after February 24, and how the essence and principle of artistic design are changing in a historical context. Combining the chair’s form that was developed in peacetime with a camouflage net from wartime, we aimed to convey our feelings. For every Ukrainian, the world, regardless of his age and profession, is divided into "Before" and "After," and design has acquired new meanings and functions.
Make yourself at home:
Our installation is a manifesto - an attempt to draw attention to the fact that the war is not over; the war continues. Ukraine is a home for millions of people, for millions of women and children who are forced to seek out temporary asylum. We are grateful to be able to team up with Brompton Design District and its curator Jane Withers Studio to represent the theme of the festival ‘Make Yourself At Home. London Design Festival has become a temporary home for Gropius Low chair Military Edition, just as Europe has become a temporary home for hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians.
The Process:
Design is a method of solving specific problems; it is primarily about function, which is followed by a clear aesthetic form. Design finds its place in war. After February 24th, Ukrainian designers focused on functional objects that were necessary for the new wartime reality. These objects help solve problems in bomb shelters, temporary shelters, dugouts, temporary hospitals, and bombed houses.
In Vinnytsia and other cities and villages of Ukraine, with the outbreak of the war, there are many centers where willing locals and people who moved from the North, East, and South of Ukraine are convening to weave camouflage nets for military needs.
VinnSolard is one of those centers where, from the earliest days of the war, people of various professions worked on camo nets, united by a single goal - victory.
Among those who joined the volunteering were Antonina Latayko, art director and a graphic designer from Kyiv, and Nataliya Bakulina, producer and, until recently, editor of ELLE Decoration Ukraine.
The net with which the Gropius chair has been upholstered was woven in the original technique, developed by volunteers from the VinnSolard Center, located in Vinnytsia.
Mathematician Svetlana has woven the net base for the Gropius chair, which has more than 4,000 knots. From Vinnytsia, the base was transferred to production in Kyiv, where it was stretched on a chair over fabric upholstery. After that Tonya and Nata tied colored pieces of fabric that remained from our production to the chair.

“Give thanks to God, who made necessary things simple, and complicated things unnecessary.”
-- Hryhorii Skovoroda, a Ukrainian philosopher (1722 – 1794)
NOOM is a Ukrainian design brand that speaks the clarified and purified language of design. As the Ukrainian philosopher, Hryhorii Skovoroda said, the most necessary things are simple, and since February 24 we have fully grasped this in a way that has never been possible before. For us 2022 is the year of rethinking, a year of cleansing and gathering. Ukraine’s culture doesn’t have any other way of development than purification by cleansing it of any lingering echoes of totalitarian regimes of the Soviet era. The clearing is the path to self-identification, a tremendous bout of catharsis that reveals the well-spring of life.
“Puriosity”
We developed the name of the exposition “Puriosity” (Pure + Curiosity) in brainstorming. This term is fully described our feelings at this moment. We all aim to be purer in the cultural knowledge of self and curiosity is a basic element of our cognition.
Our exposition “Puriosity” is a visual representation of this philosophy. Pure design is clear and perfect. Pure form, color, and function blended into one curios composition.
The exposition consists of different items, each of which has its own story and concept. Design is all about exploring.
The driving concept behind our furniture collection relies on the modernism movement and suprematism, invented by Ukrainian artist Kazimir Malevich. As a century ago art is undergoing a rebirth, getting rid of everything unnecessary.
Ideas of functionalism and conciseness, the combination of design, art and objects formed by a composition of simple geometric shapes, are still relevant. NOOM’s chief designer Kateryna Sokolova has “gathered” the shapes of furniture, lighting, and accessories from simple clean lines and geometric forms. NOOM objects aim to bring a simple aesthetic to any space, but at the same time appeal to interact: to pump, to play, to bubble.
Welcome to take a look at NOOM's staple classics like Gropius chair, Brandt coffee tables, El Lighting, and Suprematic vases, and share with us your visual and tactile experience.

Gropius Low Chair Military EditionBy NOOM in collaboration with Nataliya Bakulina and Antonina Latayko
Design is a method of solving certain problems, it is primarily about the function, which is followed by a clear aesthetic form. Design finds its place in war, for example, in the creation of camouflage nets.
The net with which the Gropius chair has been upholstered was woven in the original technique, developed by volunteers from the VinnSolard Center, located in Vinnytsia.

Among those who joined the volunteering were Latayko Antonina, art director, a graphic designer from Kyiv, and Bakulina Nataliya, producer and, until recently, editor of ELLE Decoration Ukraine.
The camouflage net is a mesh base with strips of green, black, gray, beige, and brown cloth tied to it. Since all sports and fishing nets in the city were bought almost immediately, one local citizen, a school gym teacher, taught those who wanted to weave such bases with their own hands. Mathematician Svetlana, having mastered the technique, has improved it by calculating the optimal number of cells and their size. It was Svetlana who woven the net base for the Gropius chair, which has more than 4,000 knots. From Vinnytsia, the base was transferred to production in Kyiv, where it was stretched on a chair over fabric upholstery. After that, the chair went to the office of the famous Kyiv architectural bureau, which during the war became a volunteer center. After that Tonya and Nata tied colored pieces of fabric that remained from our production to the chair.
Our installation is a manifesto - an attempt to draw attention to the fact that the war is not over, the war continues. Combining the design of a chair, that was developed in peacetime with a camouflage net from wartime, we aimed to convey our feelings.
